Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When you walk into a 9th grade classroom at our high school, you might expect to hear students conversing in one of ten different languages. You might find students giving each other feedback on an argumentative essay, or discussing our class text.
At our Title I school in Brooklyn, our student body includes students from many cultural and religious backgrounds, LGBTQ students, and students with diverse learning needs.
In our English class, our students benefit from reading books that are relevant, culturally responsive, and inspiring.
My Project
One of our students' favorite activities is our Friday practice - independent reading. We've seen our students' faces light up when they spot a text in our library that they recognize. Unfortunately, our library is too small to meet the needs of our students!
All students, despite the reading level they come in at, benefit from independent reading.
We hope that by building out our independent reading library to include new thematically relevant titles at many levels, we will inspire all students to improve their reading.
Please help inspire reading in our students so that the next generation is equipped with the literacy skills that help them succeed and develop the empathy needed to show compassion towards others.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
