Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The bilingual/biliterate 3rd graders in room 9 work hard everyday on their reading skills in English and Spanish. They set reading goals every 6 weeks, some choosing to focus on reading more in one language or the other, some working on increasing their stamina for longer books, some working on reading more fiction or nonfiction. They love hearing stories read aloud, and their excitement over new books is precious.
Some are voracious readers, tearing through chapter books at and above grade level, while others are hesitant readers growing in confidence and motivation.
Some are able to purchase books from monthly book orders, while others depend on our classroom and school library. Some get super excited about the newest Dog Man, while others are intrigued by non-fiction battles between animal species. Regardless of their current preferences, they love to read!
My Project
These perceptive 8 & 9 year old readers are making connections between the world and their lives. A variety of engaging chapter books and graphic novels will help them become more fluent, motivated readers, as well as offer them a glimpse into lesser known lives of important women inventors and leaders.
Some students might find a kindred spirit in a book's character while others may realize the commonalities they share with someone of a different background.
A variety of perspectives will open up the world to these budding readers! They love to read about other kids like them and different from them.
