This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Hawthorne School is a small k3-5th grade school on the north side of Milwaukee with a high at risk population. Our school is 92% free and reduced lunch. My class is small, only 4 students this year.
Our classroom is a self-contained special education classroom, designed for students with severe disabilities.
Our class works on academic as well as life skills. All of the students are hard workers who are eager to be successful during all lessons. This year our class is focusing on learning from our mistakes, rather than becoming frustrated.
My Project
My students often have difficulty understanding time, and how much time is left for them to complete their work. Having visual timers would help even my youngest students who don't yet understand how long a minute is. Having the timers will also help the teacher's to stay on task (because sometimes we get distracted too).
Help our class stay on our schedule!
We also need clipboards so that we can move around the room while completing our work. We use our whole classroom and not just one whiteboard. Right now we are chained to our desks when we are working, often having to get up go check the board and then go back to our desk! Often by the time we get back we've already forgotten what we needed to write! If our class had clip boards we would have more freedom to learn and could even start going on educational hunts around the school!
