This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The last 30 minutes of the day, I get to bond with my Homeroom students. This class is called Advisory. Students share fun things and their frustrations. We play games, color, help each other with assignments, and we have a snack cupboard that I replenish myself. This 30 minutes has become the highlight of many students day. Word is getting out and students from other Advisory classrooms are seeking passes to our Advisory classroom.
Our Advisory class is student centered and a safe place to return to after their academic classes.
Students created a wish list to make our Advisory class even more successful. Students love to color and my coloring choices are limited. Sophie, a student really wants a Strawberry Shortcake coloring book. I haven't found it yet. The students chose these coloring books. We also chose games, craft items, phone charging cords, logic puzzles, cups for hot cocoa, journaling prompts, resume paper, and snacks.
The beauty of playing, coloring, laughing and being together phone free is that meaningful relationships are being built in our class. When Covid hit and classes resumed, students didn't mingle or make the time to make new friends. In Advisory, we talk to each other and laugh. Students are seeking advice from one another.
If a student opts out, we ask them if they are sure. We invite everyone in our Advisory to be a part of the group. We push our chairs together during Advisory.. We understand if a student just wants to do his or her own thing. Please consider helping us.
