This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our IB school strives to teach students to be open-minded, inquirers, and risk-takers. They come in every morning filled with questions, eager to learn more. My students are amazing critical-thinkers, at only ten and eleven years old they watch the news and are concerned and invested in the world around them.
I believe in challenging each student to reach their maximum potential.
At my Title I school over 96% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. I have an inclusion class with many students receiving special education services and many receiving gifted services. My students are diverse, driven, and unique. Gifted, IEPs, dreamers, doers; I believe that we are all more than a label, and I strive to create an environment where all students have a voice.
My Project
My mission is to make learning fun! I do this in a variety of ways including using a lot of technology and flexible seating. Those things are all wonderful, but few things make me happier than helping my students discover a love of reading. I love bringing in books and seeing the excitement as we sort dig through the boxes to find the perfect book for each student.
History will come alive as we read about important historical figures and events.
I love blending our Social Studies and literacy into one awesome learning experience. The Who Was and What Was series is beloved in my classroom. I want to use my students love of this series to help them learn more about the historical figures we study in Social Studies. I also want to add another great historical fiction book about an inspiring immigration story, Inside Out and Back Again, to our class literature circle collection. I have many important jobs as a teacher, and helping develop life long learners that love to read is on the top of my list!
