About My Students

Since our formation in 2010, we have promoted STEM throughout our community. With over 1,000 hours invested in outreach programs and events, the Tiki Techs have inspired generations of future STEM leaders. Our cooperation and communication with the community has created a foundation for innovation.

Our team motto — kulia i ka nu’u (strive for the summit)motivates our Tiki Techs to develop personal opportunities, deepen their skills base, and empower our rural community.

Our team’s diverse composition (balanced gender ratio, more than 12 different ethnic heritages, a majority of team economically disadvantaged, and some students with special education needs) empowers us to find innovative, effective, and creative solutions to a wide variety of problems.

Through this project, our high school students will work in engineering teams to develop and test 3 underwater research robots. They will also mentor a local middle school team to build a sustainable pipeline of student scientist. They will compete in the Big Island ROV Regional in May and hopefully advance to World Championships in June. In addition to designing, building, and testing their robot, the students will prepare a research board and a 30 page technical paper on this project. Students will present to both judges and the public on what they learned in teamwork, collaboration, and applied engineering practices as well as how they can apply to their future academic endeavours and projects.

In Their Own Words

I want the freshman students to apply their understanding of the engineering design process, the scientific method, and the design thinking process to real-world phenomena while competing. This was what helped make my high school experience awesome and I want the best for them. At our exhibitions, I have seen these students completed 8 engineering cycles in everything from 3D puzzles to escape rooms. This project will require our youngest team mates to refine their skills in CAD, 3D printing, engineering process, design, and construction. I look forward to watching them soar and helping them where needed.

I am excited to help the freshman and middle school students with their design work on this project this year as a senior. I want to help them understand the process of successful team engineering and enjoy the challenges and rewards of collaboration just as I have in high school.

I want to understand the ocean and how we can be the best stewards of its resources. I think that by building this underwater robot I will be able to explore the ocean in greater depth and I hope to do a science fair project related to this work in the future. I could see myself becoming an ROV pilot in the future and this is a great way to get starter. I'm also excited to be doing this work in parallel with a middle school team and working to mentor them.
