My Project

My student are in need of various ways to improve reading and problem solving skills. They have not had library class in the past and my hope is to continue helping students improve their literacy skills and social emotional learning. I teach all students in the school - grades 5-8 - who come from various backgrounds and reading levels. Some are just developing their love of reading and then many are below grade level and reluctant to pick up a book. We have an all-new book collection, and we are so thankful, and we just need to round out the library space.

A few years ago, for a college course, I read "Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain" by Maryanne Wolf, and in the book she discusses how reading -- to the point where you feel "under water" and cannot hear what is going on around you-- is when brain synapses grow in a child's brain.

I hope that by providing a safe, comfortable space and various ways to practice their skills, children who are reluctant to read will become more engaged and improve their skill level. Our collection of puzzles slowly grows, as we search for puzzles that can be completed in one class period. The puzzling provides an important spatial awareness activity, and a chance for important Social Emotional Learning. By working together to solve a puzzle, students can quietly chat.
