My Project

Compassion is an essential value that can transform the way students interact with the world, especially for those from special needs and low-income households. Through our classroom gardening project, my students will learn to see the world through the eyes of others by understanding the challenges families face in accessing fresh, healthy food. By growing vegetables, they will experience firsthand the care, patience, and effort it takes to produce food—something that is often taken for granted. As they nurture their plants, they begin to understand the perspective of those who may struggle with food insecurity, building empathy and awareness beyond their own experiences.

As my students work together to grow vegetables, they will also learn how small actions can help ease the burdens of others.

By bringing these skills home, they can teach their families how to grow their own food, providing a sustainable way to support their households. In doing so, students will learn that compassion isn’t just a feeling—it’s an action. They will be making a real difference by helping their loved ones save money and eat healthier meals, while also fostering a sense of responsibility and pride in their ability to contribute.

To measure the success of my students’ understanding of compassion, I will look at both their actions and reflections. I will observe how they care for the plants, support their classmates, and talk about their experiences in journals or class discussions. Success will be evident when students show increased empathy, a willingness to help others, and confidence in using their new skills at home. Ultimately, I hope to see my students not only learning about compassion but living it—in the garden, in the classroom, and in their communities.
