This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students need to see how science can come to life through great storytelling. These novels and nonfiction narratives help illuminate the two pathways our students pursue: biomedical (infectious disease, comas, cerebral palsy) and engineering (rocket science, astrophysics.)
My students are bright, enthusiastic young math, science, engineering, and biomedical scholars who have joined a high school magnet program that has two elective courses - a biomedical pathway and an engineering pathway.
In English Language Arts we get to see how science storytelling can illuminate complex problems and concepts through great writing. My job is to help our students communicate complexity through research, discussion, and strong writing. These books will inspire their own scientific research.
My Project
Students will use these books for science-themed literature circles to build community through shared reading. The reading will in turn drive their own research projects, as they set off in search of answers to satisfy scientific curiosities. They will see how writers explain challenging concepts, and how research and narrative can enhance one another.
Our classroom library is light on science-based narratives.
With most of my students in a STEMM program, I want to offer an opportunity for them to bond over science-inspired books. These will offer them wider choice in their reading, and a chance to connect with other students.
