Our students attend a rural public high school, which serves about 650 students. We are located in an area where the socioeconomic status of many residents is low. Many students have parents who are out of work. Our school relies heavily on state funding and this year, we are struggling once again due to the state not coming through with that funding. Programs and teachers are being cut and our students are feeling the brunt. Our students are creative and kind and they strive to reach their goals no matter what obstacles they face. They continue to achieve successfully despite more challenges and fewer resources. They forge ahead without complaints. Although funds are low, our students' passion for books hasn't dulled one bit. Please help keep this thirst for literature alive by supporting our school.
My Project
Books have to battle with cell phones, other electronic devices, and most of all, social media, for students' attention, so they better be good. Our little library that could is growing and changing every year and although we are small, we are strong, but we still need your help. Your kindness keeps us chugging!
Reading provides students with knowledge, but more importantly experiences that change, inspire, and help them grow.
I want to give our kids the world through books, but I need your help. I not only want to provide them with resources that help them prepare for the SAT, college, and the work force, I also want to provide them with books that help them figure out who they are and how to navigate a very difficult and complicated world.
I've included nonfiction books about ethically navigating and utilizing a broad world of information, exploring different types of careers, coping with sexual harassment, coping with bullying on social media just to name a few. I chose fiction books about kids exploring their sexuality, navigating relationships, and books that represent diverse ethnic groups, religions, and lifestyles. My goal is to provide literature that promotes tolerance of all people and institutions, while also letting kids explore who they are and what they stand for.
