I teach Visual Art (specifically Commercial Art and Illustration) to a group of about 150 amazing students at a large urban Title I high school. They are all amazing because of what they face each day outside of the classroom and still show up every day giving 110%. They are the strongest group of people I've met and they inspire me to do better every day. For many, art classes are where they feel the safest and where they feel heard. They express themselves freely through their art.
The students are a diverse group, ranging in students with a 1 to 1 instructional aide, to students who are college-bound.
Due to the location of our campus, students come from all over the city. 100% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch, which means that many of our students come from homes with financial difficulties. This makes many students unable to purchase the materials needed to be successful.
Since we will be in either full or partial distance learning this school year, my students need art supplies they can use at home. Many students struggled with this during our spring distance learning session.
My Project
My students already are recieving some spectacular supply kits already funded on DonorsChoose! The pastels were specifically requested by a number of students, so I'm excited that with this project students will have access to their favorite art supplies at home. Students will be using the oil pastels to practice blending colors, since we will not have easy access to paint. Oil pastel is great for this, because one it never dries! Rulers will be very helpful for our unit on one point and two point perspective, which is one of the most important foundational drawing skills when doing landscapes. Wooden pencils are great for shading and value drawing, and some students do not have pencils readily available at home. Students were so excited to hear about their kits and can't wait to get them!
