My Students
My amazing, creative students dream as big as anyone but sometimes, they see and hear their relatives and neighbors disrespected or ignored, and that can often make them feel disrespected or ignored.
"I Am Every Good Thing", by Derrick Barnes, with pictures by Gordon C.
James is an incredible book every parent should read to their children, no matter their zip code. It is a powerful message and it is beautifully produced. I would love to give every student in our school, beginning with our impressionable kindergarteners and first graders, a copy of this book and create a school project where we send our own messages of confidence and hope to the author as a thank you.
Our school is located in a part of New York City where income inequality is impossible to miss. A five minute walk is all it takes to go from public housing to million dollar homes. The inequity affects the resources within our public schools, as well. Lack of funding limits the programs and possibilities we are able to give our students. Our dedicated team of teachers and administrators strive everyday to inspire our kids to always reach for the stars!
My Project
"I Am Every Good Thing", by Derrick Barnes, is an amazing book that makes all children, especially children of color, feel that they are loved, respected and worthy and capable of all good things.
The students in our school community often witness racial injustice and this book will help build their own self worth.
Not only will it help my students, but it can have the effect of helping boost the self confidence of siblings, cousins, and even parents when it is read at home. A perfect bedtime story or anytime story!
Thank you for considering this project! I recommend everyone pick up a copy of this book for themselves and their friends, too!
