Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our elementary located in San Diego has been serving students and families in City Heights since 1997. Our elementary enrolls students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. In addition, 97% of the students at our school are students from low-income families and 75% of all students are English learners.
I have been employed as a School Social Worker at this school for over a year and have seen firsthand the need for easily accessible healthy snacks for students.
Our students regularly come to my office and our Family Resource Center during recess stating “I am hungry” and “Can I have a snack”.
The money collected from this DonorsChoose campaign would directly be used to purchase a variety of healthy snacks, such as popcorn, fruit snacks, and crackers, for our students. All students should have access to a healthy snack option when they are hungry and should not have to return to class hungry.
