Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Each Friday the Mighty Milers are excited to stretch out and practice running with one another. These students choose to take time out of their recess each Friday to learn more about running, practice agility drills, and play running games. Showing these children joy of running helps them to develop a healthy passion that will stick with them through their youth into adulthood.
These young runners love to cheer each other on while they rack up the miles!
Each week they set goals to run a little farther or a little faster than the week before. They run alongside their buddies, making sure everyone reaches their goal for that week.
My Project
The runners look forward to the FunRun hosted by NYRR each spring. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to get to the location of the event. The students end up missing out on a lot of great team building and agility activities due to the travel restrictions we face.
The runners are always eager to participate in the obstacle courses, relay races, and agility games, but usually they don't get the chance to.
In past years, the students have placed all of their focus on helping one another complete the 1/2 mile run. Providing them with the time to complete team building activities will bring them closer as a team. The agility games are not only a blast, but will hone the runner's skills so they can continue improving their skills. This group also loves to show their school spirit. Cheering on their coach during the coaches 100 meter dash is always a blast. The fifth grade runners especially love to represent their school in the Parade of Schools too.
Overall the FunRun is a community event that brings runners of ages and locations around NYC together to enjoy and celebrate the joys of running!
