My Students

Remember the first time you were in the woods? My urban high school students always blossom when they experience the outdoors, seeing the world through different eyes, and profoundly changed by their experience. We need supplies to make it happen!

Our school is a high-poverty, Title 1 high school located in a very large urban area.

The youth are ages 14-19, and 85% are Black, 10% Hispanic, and 5% other, including Chinese and South Asian. Most are immigrants or children of immigrants, and virtually none of them have access to the outdoors with their families. In fact, many of our students' families are quite afraid of the outdoors. Our club, Outdoors Unlimited, provides those students with not only access to, but a deeper understanding and appreciation of the outdoors.

My Project

Most of these materials are basic supplies. The markers, colored pencils, clipboards, etc. will be used for planning meetings, activities and brainstorms before hikes, advertising the club and in fundraising materials and art projects on the trips. The book Silent Spring will help us bring awareness to the history of the environmental movement and allow us to transition the club to a full-time class. Our club has access to other funds, but not for supplies. We partner with the Appalachian Mountain Club, who provide training for me as well as equipment for our trips. Our own fundraising supplies us with money for transportation and food while on the trips. Your donation will fill the gap in our funding!

"Society is telling kids unconsciously that nature's in the past.

It really doesn't count anymore, that the future is in electronics, and besides, the bogeyman is in the woods," says Richard Louv. While some may argue that technology is good, it is clearly vital that urban youth have access to the outdoors, and see the many ways that it can be enjoyed. These materials will help make the outdoors accessible to them.
