This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Science fair projects have come a long way since I was in school. Instead of dissolving pennies in soda or watching food coloring course through a stalk of celery, my students are using the tools of biotechnology to ask questions that can be answered using DNA evidence. But it can be expensive!

I work with a talented group of recent immigrant students in an urban school district.

Our school serves the needs of English language learners in a program that emphasizes simultaneous content-area learning and language acquisition through collaborative, hands-on projects. Every teacher in the school is responsible for helping these young people grow and become comfortable in the language of their adopted country, and our diversity ensures a rich and interesting learning environment. Our students arrive from some of the world's most troubled regions, and often have had little prior access to education. We strive to bring each of them up to state standards for on-time graduation, meeting the same requirements faced by their native-born peers. My subject, Biology, is often quite abstract to young people of any age, much less those from another country and culture. The more immediately kids can experience science, the better they will learn it. That's where your support can help!

My Project

We have been fortunate over the years to assemble a functioning DNA lab in our high school through corporate giving, used university gear and most importantly, the donations of thoughtful givers like you through DonorsChoose. We have everything we need to collect samples, extract DNA and amplify the genes we are interested in comparing. The critical, final step to this kind of experiment is sequencing, the reading of the DNA code itself which MUST be done off site. We have been fortunate to develop a relationship with a local firm to provide a discounted service, but still require a few dollars per sample to run. With each experiment requiring several samples each for validity, the cost can quickly add up for students. A small donation can make it possible for our teams of scientists to keep their research projects moving forward, and allow them to continue to compete effectively against better-funded schools in science fairs, and contribute original discoveries to science itself.

Your help in supporting our proposal will allow deserving youth to bring their original research projects full circle, and draw conclusions from the evidence you help them to generate.
