Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One of the many challenges facing teachers is the growing need for technology in the classroom. I teach at a title 1 school and our students come from very low income families. My students don't have access to technology at home. I would like to give them the opportunity at school.

I teach at a title 1 school and our students come from very low income families.

My students don't have access to technology at home and because of limited funding at school the student/computer ratio is only 3 computers to 25 &€Â" 30 students in my classroom. This gives each student only about 30 minutes per week to work on the computers. This is not enough time for students to learn to use the computers or complete any of the many learning activities available for my students. My goal is to have a set of 5 tablets so that I can have a technology center in my classroom. A technology center would allow my students to learn the keyboarding section of our state core standards and to practice other learning skills.

My Project

There are many educational websites and programs that I would love to use with my students: however with limited computers my students are only able to scratch the surface. I would like to have 5 tablets to make a technology center for my students. I would teach my students basic keyboarding using Elearning for kids keyboarding so they could practice the writing skills on programs such as Storybird or Microsoft Word, as well as preparing them for the end of year state writing testing which is online. Also, my students would receive daily math and Language Arts practice with programs such as MobyMax and Fast Math. They would use tablets to view eBooks of the genres we study in Language Arts and they would be able to learn and write about Science and Social Studies topics using sites such as World Book Online and National Geographic Kids.

My students will show greater achievement because the additional time spent on the tablets will give my students a greater knowledge of technology and allow them to be comfortable taking tests in both writing and other tool formats on a computer as well as practicing their reading, writing and math skills which will increase their achievement.
