My PreK3 students are some of the most amazing children I have ever met. They live in one of the most dangerous communities in our nation's capital. Everyday they walk down a hill to school where they are able to escape the violence that riddles their neighborhood. They attend a Title I school where 100% of the population receives free lunch. Despite all of the challenges that face outside the school walls, they still come to school each day ready and excited to learn.
My Project
Since I started teaching 7 years ago, the doll house as always been a favorite free choice activity for students. They are able to use their imagination while working on solving social problems with each other and acting out real life scenarios. After 7 years of use, there are only a few pieces of furniture left and even most of that is broken. These materials will allow for my students to continue their dramatic play in the doll house, which will in turn provide them with the foundational social skills needed to solve problems real world problems with their peers. It will also provide them with an opportunity to learn and use new vocabulary related scenarios that happen in a house.
