My Students

A typical day in the classroom would consist of 21 students eager to learn. They get so excited when they get to learn/read about events that are current/relatable to them. Although it is a challenge providing them with the proper materials, I do the best I can, and at the end of the day, they're happy.

I have a melting pot of 21 students who are 9-10 years of age.

Of the 21, 5 are English Language Learners, and about 5 are being monitored. A majority of my students are from low-income families and they receive free or reduced lunch. We are a Title 1 school. My students are an awesome bunch of kids who love to read. Although they love reading, they often have a hard time getting access to reading material either online or through books, especially current nonfiction texts. Because our school doesn't allow our kids to bring home textbooks, my kids wouldn't be able to read even if they wanted to. And, although the library allows them to borrow nonfiction books, the stories aren't current. A lot of them don't even have access to the internet at home. They would love and appreciate it so much if they had access to these types of text in and out of the classroom.

My Project

My students need to be exposed to nonfiction texts, and what better way than through current events and news. My students will be utilizing the Scholastic News, Geography Spin, and Science Spin magazines during reading centers, for homework, classwork, and to also better their comprehension skills. With these magazines, my students will be exposed to the different text structures, and will also get to practice the skills learned in Reading Wonders. My kids love reading nonfiction, especially if it is something they can relate to. The material in Wonders is not enough, that's why I feel that these magazines will support what is being learned and taught in our reading curriculum in a fun, engaging, and educational way.

Donations to this great cause will really improve my classroom in more ways than one.

It will not only give my students the resources to succeed, but it will give them the resources that they need to be confident, knowledgable readers of tomorrow. It will also improve their fluency, their comprehension skills, understanding of text structures, how to utilize strategies learned in our current reading program, and knowledge of other subjects like Science.
