My students need a classroom library that offers a wide range of titles, authors, and genres, so they can choose a book of interest that's at their reading level.
As an educator at a low-income/high poverty school, my students face many challenges in and out of the classroom. The majority of our student population is on free or reduced-price lunch and many of them have little or no academic support at home. My class has a wide-range of abilities including gifted and talented as well as those with special needs, and many of my students are reluctant readers. Despite these challenges, it is my job to provide all of my students with the most creative and meaningful learning experiences possible.
"There is no such thing as a child who hates to read; there are only children who have not found the right book." - Frank Serafini.
My students have a wide range of reading abilities spanning from 2nd to 7th grade reading levels. Our current classroom library is two small shelves with a limited variety that cannot meet the needs of every child. It is my job to ensure they are finding books that are a good fit for them to help them increase their fluency, comprehension, and critical thinking skills and to foster a lifelong love of reading!
My Project
This project will provide a huge assortment of titles, authors, and genres in varying reading levels so my students can find a good fit book that interests them! The book bins will help our classroom library stay organized and user-friendly. My goal is to no longer see a student browse our classroom library only to walk away empty handed because nothing there interested them.
The titles selected have come from student recommendations to ensure they will meet multiple interests.
By providing my students with a better classroom library, they will have easier access to "good fit" books of interest. This will build their confidence as readers and develop a lifelong love of reading, all while practicing important fluency, comprehension, and analytical skills vital to their social, emotional, and academic success.
