Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I’m excited to share a unique project we’ve started at our school—a theater program designed to help our English Language Development (ELD) students build confidence, improve their language skills, and express themselves creatively. This program is inspired by the NYC Lincoln Center Theater’s Learning English and Drama (LEAD) Project. Our program pairs our talented theater teaching artists with ELD teachers.
The program engages students through theater games to build trust, foster a sense of community, and bring fun to learning, collaborative Activities to develop vocal projection, clarity, and expressiveness using scripted material.
Students will co-create performances based on curriculum texts, allowing them to take ownership of their learning and collaborate as a team.
Last semester, we piloted the program with "Frankenstein" and had an incredible experience. This spring, we’re aiming even higher! Our goal is to perform another play, inviting students, teachers, administrators, and district representatives to witness what our students have achieved.
To support this work, we need sets of graphic novels that align with our curriculum and can serve as the foundation for our performances.
