In kindergarten, a big challenge is helping kids with fidgets. My list includes a good set of 'fidget helpers'. Why fidgets? Fidgets support self-regulation by helping kids stay calm and focused, giving their excess energy or stress a physical outlet. Fidgets improve focus and attention by giving them something to do with their hands while learning to listen and stay engaged. They reduce disruptive behavior by providing an outlet.
Whether it be in the classroom, during recess, or on the bus, a lot of kids find it difficult to manage that fidgety energy and/or anxiety.
My goal is to address that energy with the right tools, with wiggle seats and timers. Yes, there are some stickers and birthday crowns on the list too, but who doesn't love a cool sticker or a birthday crown?
