My Students

"Listen to the MUSTN’TS, child. Listen to the DON’TS. Listen to the SHOULDN’TS, The IMPOSSIBLES, the WON’TS. Listen to the NEVER HAVES. Then listen close to me-Anything can happen, child, ANYTHING can be.” - Shel Silverstein

Our school is in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the country.

Our students come from diverse backgrounds: Vietnamese, Ethiopian, Somali, Mexican, African-American, and white. The diversity and the way these children notice and yet don't notice, it is vibrant and endearing. All of my students have personal and unique cultures that make them who they are. Those cultures need to be seen and valued in order to build a real community where we trust and support one another. Then, anything is possible. My students are capable, ready, and they deserve to have the best resources available.

My Project

As we head back into the classroom this fall, things still look different. Kids are seating facing forward, table groups, and sharing supplies is off-limits, but we are fully back and our numbers are large. My hope is that I can create a classroom that feels much like it did before Covid with active, hands-on learning. This project is a way to make that possible. The items listed allow me to give each child a separate set of supplies and a way to organize them and keep them separate from each other. Using this system, each child can store LEGOs, playdoh, workbooks, markers, crayons, blocks, manipulatives, and the myriad of other learning supplies we'll be using this year in a safe way. It is not possible for me alone to sanitize all these tiny items each day while teaching, planning, and supporting kids. Instead, I'd like to give kids a way to efficiently organize a personal set of high-interest manipulatives that they can quickly access/clean up during lessons and keep for the next day.
