Our students are hungry for books and the school library is a safe space to read, study, or simply relax. Having books students want to read will help increase learning! Our student population consists of a high percentage of low-income families who have little to no access to opportunities outside of the school and our city.
Students feel safer and more comfortable in a library with books about their specific demographics, including LGBTQ students.
Teenagers want to be seen. They also want to read about people who are similar to them. They also love stickers!
The library is where students come to discover and pursue the love of reading. It is the library's responsibility to make sure that the books they find there represent everyone!
Our library is a safe haven for all of our students. I have students who come to me nervously asking if we have any LGBTQ books. Once they find books that reflect their lives, they will leave with smiles and stacks of books.
These books will help my students feel seen and valued in our community.
I want to make sure that I have just as much selection for a student looking for LGBTQ books as I do for those looking for any other type of book. Please help us to fill our shelves with books that meet the needs of all our students.
