My Students
My students come from some of the most dangerous areas in Philadelphia. However, when they walk through the doors of our school they feel safe, loved, and are eager to learn. 100% of the students receive free meals. Despite their unfortunate circumstances they come to school each day to learn, and grow.
Over the years I have noticed a lack of positive praise and motivation from parents.
The students in my school rarely receive positive praise or assistance at home. One of my major pushes is to make sure each child's accomplishments, big or small, are celebrated in our incentive based learning program. Students are rewarded for being active learners, team players, and LEADERS!
My Project
Intrinsic motivation and redirection is great, but sometimes students need that extra boost when they're doing the right thing. In my classroom I want to focus on the positive behavior and rewards students throughout the day for being active learners, and leaders. In my 5th and 6th grade classrooms the students will be part of a ticket program, where students earn tickets for doing the right thing. The snacks, mini toys, gel pens, and other amazing prizes will be available for purchase (using tickets) when the students have enough banked.
The students can earn tickets by being active and productive citizens inside and outside of the classroom.
In the classroom, students will earn tickets for being in class on time and prepared, answering questions (I love use tickets during guided instruction because it motivates students to answer questions, and enriches discussion!), assisting a friend , and any other helpful contributions that are made in our classroom environment. Outside of the classroom students can earn tickets for making the right choices, assisting peers/adults, and problem solving.
The ticket incentive program motivates students to work hard, and creates an overall positive environment inside and outside of the classroom. Often times students with " behavior challenges" receive incentives for positive behavior, leaving kids who typically behave out. All students should be celebrated, and rewarded for positive behavior and active learning. This incentive program will help create a positive learning environment for all, while encouraging students to make importance decisions, balance ticket accounts, and SAVE!
