Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember what it was like the first time you connected to the Internet? The amount of research you could conduct and questions you could now get answers for were endless. Now, imagine what it would feel like to have this access taken from you?
I am a fifth grade teacher at an elementary school in a diversified area.
My students come from a very broad range of socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds.
Most of my students have computers and Internet access at home but for some, school is their only opportunity to use this technology. My students need daily access to computers and the Internet so they can properly understand and research the curriculum we cover each day.
In the other classrooms at my school, the teachers and students are able to access our district's online curriculum via the Internet right in their classrooms. This provides students with a review of their math, science, and language arts skills in a way that is interactive and meaningful. Unfortunately, my classroom is the only one at our school with old wiring, and my Internet access is intermittent, at best.
My Project
A wireless router in my classroom would allow me the opportunity to get online with my students every day.
Without Internet access in our classroom, my students are forced to write down assignments and questions to look-up at home. For those without Internet at home, they must depend upon our once per week visit to the school’s computer lab.
This past school year, our district also switched to online attendance. Due to my classroom's lack of Internet access, I must send two students to the office each day with the names of those who are absent, causing them to miss valuable instructional time. If I had Internet access in my classroom, I could submit my attendance online in seconds, like every other teacher in the district.
It would be wonderful for my students to have Internet access directly in our classroom.
My students would benefit from being able to conduct online science experiments, view interactive math videos, visit spelling and vocabulary websites, and much more. Internet access in our classroom will not only provide my students with meaningful tie-ins to our lessons, but it will allow them to learn about the Internet and any future technical advancements.
