Academic integration is the goal; education needs to make a connection between “real life” and school work.
I teach Teen Living to approximately 200 seventh and eighth grade students in a rural, low income/high poverty community (2/3 of the student body receives free or reduced lunch benefits).
This grant would allow my students to combine ecology concepts (planting and harvesting) with food production/preparation/preservation into a group of hands-on units of discovery.
My Project
Without this equipment (seeds, potting soil, aprons, and storage containers) these units of discovery will not be possible. With this variety of equipment, experiencing ecology in the kitchen will be an actuality. By using food preparation techniques to reinforce the science/ecology concepts, the students can relate practical, hands-on lessons with their science curriculum.
