My Project

I'm thrilled for this project and to give my students the skills needed to plant, prune, and harvest their own food while simultaneously reducing food insecurity within Calhoun County. Calhoun County, where my school is located and students live, has a food insecurity rate higher than 30% of our country.

On more than one occasion, i've had students share with me that towards the end of the month, their adults struggle with stretching their food budget and as a result, the only meals they get are the ones at school.

While I like to send home easy to cook meals for my students like Chef Boyardee or Easy Mac, I'd like to be able to empower them by teaching them to plant, prune, and harvest their own food to take home and share with their families.

In addition to this, I plan on pairing this fresh produce with easy recipes that appeases all palates and budgets. Food is a right, not a privilege and I want to use my love of teaching, social justice, and agricultural science degree from Michigan State University to instill this belief into ALL of my students.
