My Students

I teach art at a small elementary school in New York for students with severe disabilities. The students in my school are between four and eleven years old. There are twelve 6:1:1 classes (6 students, one teacher, and one paraprofessional), one 8:1:1 class (8 students, one teacher, and one paraprofessional) and one 12:1:1 class (12 students, one teacher, and one paraprofessional). Most of the students in my school are amazing and unique artists who happen to have Autism Spectrum Disorder.

My students really love creating art, exploring new art-making materials, and showing their work off when it is finished.

They thrive in an environment that is hands-on and interactive.

My Project

Photography is a way for students to capture their unique view of the world. Over the past few years, I've slowly been building up our digital studio resources: repurposing cameras that the school wasn't using, donating some of my own old digital cameras, and with the help of Donors Choose, acquiring a large digital printer. I continue to add to photo tools because I want my students to have access to the same kinds of photographic experiences that I had as a kid. Now I'm hoping to expand our program to include more hands-on ways of printing photographs.

The UV Exposure Unit will allow us to do contact printing using cyanotype chemicals, giving the modern process of digital photography a more hands-on experience.

Cyanotype printing is a process that was developed in the 1800s, which allows you to create a photograph with blue coloring by placing a negative directly on the photo paper and exposing it to UV light. Using cyanotype chemicals that were purchased by our school, the students will be able to make their own UV sensitive photo paper by painting the chemicals on to drawing paper. Students will be able to make their own digital negatives using the transparency film and our digital printer. The UV Exposure Unit will allow us to print inside without having to rely on the sun. The UV Exposure Unit and transparency film can also be used with the Speedball Photo Emulsion Chemicals for screen printing, allowing them to create more detailed designs and expanding our screen printing program as well.

I've seen my students really blossom while studying photography. Adding these resources to our program will expand how we can explore photography as a way to express who they are and how they see the world.
