My school's culture is focused on incorporating our community as much as possible. As a teacher, I've seen how interconnected it is from parents being involved in the school to policemen and firemen walking around the school building. It is extremely special when policemen and firemen are familiar with students and have a unique bond with them. Not only is this beneficial for students to know community helpers in their community, but it also makes students self-aware of who's part of our community! Because of this, I strive to build a learning community in the classroom. A classroom that is student-centered and where students strive to become independent thinkers.
My Project
I'm a first year teacher who moved into a classroom that already had books for a classroom library. I was pretty happy that the teacher before me gifted me all these books! As I started organizing my library I noticed there was a lack of current, relative books that my students could connect to.
As we're currently in Black History Month, it upsets me that my students don't have a library that is informing them of the amazing leaders and advocates that we celebrate during this month.
Some of the books I've added range from current books like Sulwe to Whoosh! a book that informs reader of Loonie Johnson, the creator of the super soaker! Other titles include Lebron James, Harriet Tubman and the Freedom Train, Who Was Jackie Robinson?, Escape North!, and Coretta Scott King.
I ask that you fund my project so my students can enjoy books that gives them a space where they can feel welcome and valued.
