My Students
I teach in an older, urban, public school that is high poverty. My students are economically disadvantaged. We have a number of students who are homeless. In my classroom alone I have had over 50% of my class come and go during the school year. Several of my students are also here in the United States for the first time, and English is not their first language. The students in my sixth grade class are trying very hard to be successful but they need help. Many of them do not read at grade level. Writing is a struggle. They generally do not have access to technology outside of school and they need to be able to print their projects. My students are concrete learners. They often lack basic school supplies and winter clothing.
Many of my students are the children of deployed military personnel and all my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch.
My Project
I have a group of sixth graders who cannot go outside for recess because they do not have the proper winter gear. I am asking for eight sweatshirts in assorted sizes and twelve pairs of heavy sweat pains in various sizes. These sweatshirts and pants will enable my kids to actually go outside for recess. They desperately need some warm clothes so they can go out for recess with the rest of their friends.
Currently some of my students have to sit on the floor in the multipurpose room during recess because they are missing essential cold weather gear.
I really believe that recess is essential to the well-being of my students. They get fresh air, they can talk to friends, they can run around and play basketball. My at-risk kids try very hard to focus on their lessons and they a break at recess.
Please help my students. Give them a chance with your donation.
