Help Engage Little Readers in TK and K With An iPad
My students need in both TK and Kindergarten an iPad2,to help bring in applications and videos that will keep them engaged and constantly learning across the curriculum.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school still has projectors and filmstrips/cassettes and VHS and ancient forms of technology to help facilitate learning. How do we stay modernized and offer our children the world at their fingertips, with broken, old technology and no library.
My students are anywhere from 4 to 6 years old.
This year my class is made up of students with some challenging backgrounds and for many this is their first school experience.
My students have recently been introduced to many important math and reading skills that they will continue to use through life.
Our school is in an area that is rich in history. It is a very low income area, but families stay around for generations to generations. English for many of our families is not their first language. As the children develop their skills many of the families are learning with them. Our school is on 99% free lunch and is a Title 1 school. Our school district is suffering with budget cuts and our school took a huge hit. We no longer have full TA Time, the library has been closed for a the second year and supplies are rationed. At such a young age, my students should love school, they shouldn't lose out because of the harsh economy.
My Project
For the longest time I was not sure how an iPad would help in the class, until I sat down and explored one. The iPad does so much more and really engages the children. I was fortunate to get one and have seen how it opens so many opportunities for the kids. However, with 24 children, having only 1 is very limiting. I can read the book to children while showing them the large color photographs, allow them to listen to a narrator reading the e-book aloud, or set it on auto play in which the pages turn themselves. This is a modernized version of books on tape. What amazing technology can do a child.
We may not have a school library, but with an iPad I can bring a library to the class. If the children do not know a word, I can pull up a picture right away to show them an example of the word. I can use the Ipad to help teach the children how to print and write. The iPad will capture the attention of students of any age and be used with many classes.
I am asking for an iPad2 for my classroom.
I am hoping to bring in hundreds of apps that will teach and reinforce writing, reading and phonics. This is so important to my classroom because my students need videos, photos and audios to help the children with their English development and in all subjects. The iPad has been proven to help in science, math, music, literacy and more. My students need this same opportunity to learn so much more.
