Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a school psychologist working in an urban school district with a very high poverty rate. The students I see, come from broken and chaotic homes where aggression and violence is prevalent. We have seen a large increase in the number of bullying incidents this year.
My students are elementary school aged in grades k-5.
Our school serves over 700 children. We had 5 new classrooms added this year with no change in our school budget. Needless to say resources are scarce. We have significant bullying issues in our school that really needs to be addressed. These books and games will give me a chance to teach my students how to treat people with respect and kindness and how to build empathy for others. These are critical skills that are crucial to their character development and that are often lacking.
My Project
Having these resources will be an enormous gift to my students. We will be able to role play real-life situations and feel what both bullies and victims feel on a daily basis. Students will have activities to help them identify and express their feelings in a healthy way. This is something they have not learned to do yet. These resources will help teach my students to make better decisions that will stick with them and help change the pattern of bullying in our school.
Due to the increase in our student population and the lack of resources to help teach them the life skills they need, these resources will help give them another outlet to express themselves.
Often times, the children I work with will not speak or communicate when they are upset, but having games and activities will help facilitate healthy communication and expression of feelings. Please help my students in trying to end bullying and begin treating each with kindness and respect.
