This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Performing hands-on inquiry-based science experiments gets students energized and helps them to internalize concepts. We need more students in STEM fields and the way to get them motivated is to expose them to real science through investigation and labs.
Our school is extremely diverse.
We have students from all socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. Because of our commitment to our students, our school is high performing despite many challenges. Our school is urban and we have roughly half of our population receiving free or reduced lunch.
My students are motivated to learn. My AP Biology students have chosen to take an extremely difficult class because of their interests and my Anatomy and Physiology students are committed to science and have chosen the class as an elective. I also have biology students who are just beginning their science coursework.
My Project
The commitment to Common Core lesson planning and STEM education has made inquiry-based science lessons even more of a priority. I believe that students learn best when they are able to design and conduct their own experiments. The materials I am requesting will be used by all of my students and embody STEM education. Students will use the Datahub and external oxygen sensor to design their own experiment and collect authentic data. Students will then analyze the data they collect. The materials I am requesting are awesome because they can be used in a variety of ways and for a variety of experiments. As a result the Datahub will be used throughout the year to foster STEM education.
We need to ensure that our students have the necessary preparation to enter competitive STEM fields.
Studies indicate that there are employers who are unable to fill career vacancies because of underprepared candidates. Donations to this project will enable students to act like real scientists and gain skills valuable to entering a college STEM program or the STEM workforce.
