Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our urban public high school is as diverse racially, culturally, and economically as our large metropolitan city.

Our student population is by majority, Hispanic (70%), followed by Asian, White, Black, Pacific Islander, and various other groups.

Almost all my students classify in our state's lowest economic category, which qualifies them for financial assistance such as reduced lunch and free tutoring programs. For nearly 50% of my students, the primary language that their family speaks at home is not English. Many of our students were classified as ESL students (English as a Second Language), when they began high school, but have now been reclassified as English Proficient. Due to funding cuts, science classes at our public high school have recently increased to average sizes of 44 students per class. We are not a private school, so in order to give these young students the best college prep environment, our science lab programs truly survive from donations and grants.

My Project

Chemistry class is so much more exciting with demonstrations! Every year when new students come into my class, one of the first questions that always comes up is, "When are we going to see some cool experiments or explosions in class?" Well, to reassure you, I always stay safe, and whenever I perform any potentially dangerous procedures, I present them at a safe distance (and even behind a shield) from the class.

A lab camera is a great modern technological tool that will expand high school Chemistry interest and learning.

In recent years, I have discovered big advantages in performing small scale experiments and demonstrations. Small scale experiments use fewer chemicals so they cost less and they are less dangerous. And many times it is easier to perform one small experiment one time for the whole class to watch. I would still often do demonstrations without a camera, but with a lab camera, students can see the reaction magnified and projected in more detail on to a screen.

For example, one must-do experiment for all advanced Chemistry students is to mix copper wire into a silver nitrate solution. Students submerge a copper wire into a test tube of silver nitrate solution, and in just 3-4 minutes the solution will change from colorless liquid water to blue water, as white "snowflakes" of silver metal start to form on the copper. With a lab camera, large groups of students can watch one of these experiments in greater, beautiful detail on a big screen even as they perform their own group version.

A lab camera would also make it easier for me to teach students how to read calibrations on measurement instruments and to visually identify chemicals by different colors, layers, and phases- solids or gases. We need and appreciate any contributions. Thanks!
