My Students

Last fall, I inherited the yearbook class, and there were limited supplies. The previous teacher did not raise funds, so our budget was in the red. This past year, my staff worked tremendously hard to throw a movie night and a dance to raise money for our budget, and we were able to balance the budget, but we will need supplies to help us design an amazing book for our school. Our budget also helps me supply students with name tags, rewards, and staff shirts.

This summer, I am going to be asking my next yearbook staff to begin capturing photos for next year's book and slideshow, but we do not have enough cameras for students to be able to do the tasks required of them.

Some students have access to smart phones, but not all students do. At the moment, some are struggling to work from home because they do not have access to the same resources that they're classmates do.

My Project

This year, I have been very fortunate to have a yearbook staff full of hard-working and positive eighth graders. I taught many of these students in 7th grade last year, and they always showed amazing attention to detail, great attitudes, and a willingness to go the extra mile. Yearbook is not an easy class. It requires students to manage their time, meet firm deadlines, and collaborate to meet a shared goal.

Planning and designing the yearbook is an opportunity for our yearbook staff members to capture the spirit and atmosphere of school.

They learn to know the ins and outs of the staff, the students, and the school's personality. This upcoming year, I'm excited to lead a new group of 7th and 8th graders as they enthusiastically jump into investigative journalism. I know they will be successful, provided that they have the resources to do it.

We need to start capturing photos over the summer, which means my staff members will need access to cameras. With cameras, they will be able to practice professional photography techniques such as "the rule of thirds," "leading lines," and "repeating patterns." This will prepare them to take photos as summer sports begin again, cross country starts to practice in August, and friends reunite after quarantine.

The yearbook is a wonderful opportunity to recognize all students, not just a select few. I'd like our school spirit to be represented in a positive and uplifting way, and I'd like our students to look back on middle school fondly. With hard work, determination, and functioning cameras, we can ensure all students are included in the yearbook and slideshow. This ultimately helps ALL students, even the quiet ones, feel like they belong. Middle school is a rough time for most kids, and it's important that they feel seen.
