Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students love learning. They come in every morning with a smile on their face, full of enthusiasm about what the day in front of them holds. The most significant thing about them is how much they love their school. We are part of a school community where the school is brand new. The school we are a part of started a little over two years ago and my students were the inaugural class here. They are the first group of students to start the school and they are going to be the first class to graduate. They feel a certain pride being the original class here, they wear their school polo shirts with honor, and they love being a part of our community.
As wonderful as our school is, because it is brand new, it is extremely limited in its resources.
The school is small, which makes for an amazing learning community, but because we are small and new, the funding we get is very limited. We are desperately in need of so many supplies and we need your help.
My Project
My students have a variety of learning needs, they are part of a collaborative special education classroom. They are second graders, but they are reading at a Kindergarten or first-grade level. Books that are appropriate for their reading level are not necessarily at their interest level. It is a struggle for them to love reading when they are at school and more of a struggle for them to read at home.
We promote a strong home-school connection, especially when it comes to literacy.
Every night our students take home a literacy bag to use with their families. The problem is, the materials that are needed for this bag are extremely lacking or non-existent. The amount of books and literacy materials our school has is small due to the limited funding. Most of the materials that go in this bag are handmade, printed paper books, or things borrowed from my personal library. The books I have requested in this project are at their reading level, but they are at their interest level as well. I can't provide books like this to them by printing or making them. The materials from this project will be able to make these literacy bags full and engaging. Right now they have literacy bags and they feel like it is a chore to read and has become a chore, especially at home. They need to fill their literacy bags with books that are going to help them, but also that they are going to love and they need your help to do just that!
