Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a first year teacher in Chicago Public Schools at Jordan Community Elementary. I will be teaching first grade to a class of African American and Hispanic at-risk students. 95% of students at Jordan come from low-income families. It is my goal to provide the best education possible to my students and a positive first grade experience to their families. My fondest memory of elementary school was in second grade when my teacher created an amazing classroom library. My teacher had a loft built in her classroom where we could read upstairs and feel on top of the world or downstairs under the loft with bean bag chairs where it felt like a cave. This atmosphere inspired me to read and I want to do the same for my students. Of course, I cannot build a loft because of fire codes, but I want to do my best to recreate the same feelings of comfort, safety, and independence. In this grant I am proposing to get six chairs that fold up and allow students to sit comfortably on our classroom rug. I will use these chairs as the "rug center" to make independent reading a coveted event. I am also asking for a book stand to display books that relate to our current theme of study. The book stand will allow me to urge students to read books that have to do with our science or social studies unit, integrating topics across curriculum. I am very grateful for this opportunity to enrich the instruction for my students. These materials will no doubt help students learn to love reading!
