Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"She (Mrs. K) even gave us our very own pencil boxes full of things for us to use and keep!" a former student announced during his 5th Grade promotion speech. I knew my students liked their pencil boxes, but I never would have guessed how much it truly meant to some of them. It's these simple things that we so often take for granted that can touch the hearts and lives of our students and promote a lifelong love for learning.

The financial and physical features of our area limit the students' positive life experiences, making school that much more important.

I teach 4th and 5th Graders that live in a very low income area where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. More than a few of our students live in homes with multiple families cramped together into very small spaces.

My students thrive when they are presented the opportunity to learn through doing. They excel at expressing themselves through art, and love mastering math. Every day I find ways to help them start to believe in their future and their selves a little more.

My Project

With the switch of science standards in California, our district is no longer providing any science materials (other than the old textbooks) or additional finances for teachers to purchase new science resources. This means that my students can only read about science and this is not likely spark their interest or love for science. To help this, I attended several science trainings for the new standards over the summer. During my Synopsys science training this summer, Synopsys provided me with some supplies like microscope slides, cover slips, and test tubes but I am missing the essential items to use these materials.

With the microscopes my students will be able to discover a whole new world that is invisible to the human eye.

They can look at their very own cheek cells, find leaves to look at leaf cells, and they can even observe the veins in a goldfish's tail.

The test tube holders will allow them to use our test tubes at their desks and do various experiments. For example, using a straw, colored water, and a paper towel allows them to investigate how water travels up a tree. With some salt water, their own spit, and Propyl Alcohol they can make their own DNA visible! The petri dishes will let us do bacteria growing experiments as well as serve for observation containers for items like leaves, rocks, and small insects. With your help, a whole new microscopic world will open up to my students and create a lasting passion for science.
