Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At the end of the year, I want my students to say "This was the best year in math, ever!". My students deserve the best math education I can give them and I desire to be able to provide a mathematical education that will encourage my students to reach for the stars!

Our students come from economically challenged environments.

My students are in a fifth-grade Math and Science classroom at a Title I school in the Washington Heights neighborhood of upper NYC. Ninety-four percent of students receive free or reduced lunch, and 30% are English Language Learners. Like most children, my students love having hands-on experiences and I want ALL of my students to be able to have access to their own personal learning needs!

My Project

My students need hands-on manipulatives such as place value boards, counters, number lines, math games and math dice to increase mathematical proficiency. These materials are much needed to encourage as much hands-on learning possible within this very special grouping of students. My students would benefit from the various center kits during our Math Workshop. In our classroom we foster independence and students need meaningful and engaging materials to allow for the teachers to meet with small groups. The centers and games would be a great benefit to our classroom and allow for continued practice of standards.

My students need engaging and high-interest math centers that will allow for my higher-leveled thinking and that is a challenge to them.

This project will allow for our classroom to effectively hold a Math Workshop block by providing materials that will engage students in learning while allowing for teachers to hold intensive intervention groups so that all students are successful.
