Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Someone once said, "A writer's work is never done." My students often forget that a writer is an artist, a skilled craftsman. In order to train college ready readers and writers, we need the necessary tools.
My tenth and eleventh grade students accepted a challenge on the first day of their freshman year: Graduate on time and continue onto college.
These students joined a school with an audacious goal of graduating 100 percent of students; a goal which it has met with its first and second graduating class.
On average, my students read and write below grade level. Yet this will not stop my fun-loving, determined and thoughtful group.
My Project
I hope to create a place in my classroom where students can access markers, highlighters, pens, binder clips, maps, and a pencil sharpener to improve their reading and writing. To be truly ready for college, students must be able to comprehend and analyze text. With highlighters and different colored pens, students will be able to sift through difficult texts with ease. To meet the demands of college-level writing, students must be able to write and edit essays independently and need pens and markers. With the proper resources, students will be able to dissect sentences, rearrange paragraphs and revise their work. This will transform how they interact with text and how they create their own.
Each of my students has a story to tell.
Each student has the ability to comprehend difficult texts and compose beautiful essays. Utilizing the tools included in this project, the students enrolled in my courses will be prepared for college and ready to tackle whatever challenge comes next.
