Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Living and working in an urban environment, it's often a challenge to invoke the 'bio-' component of a biology class. Although I grew up in a rural environment, many of my kids have little or no experience with nature, so it's important to bring the outdoors to the kids.

I serve a population of recent immigrants with a wide range of educations, cultures and experiences.

What they share is a need to learn English at the same time that they are learning my discipline, biology. Ours is a grade 9-12 public school dedicated to meeting the needs of recent immigrant students in New York City. We work with speakers of diverse language, cultural and educational backgrounds to ensure all receive access to an education that will allow them to achieve their own American dreams. As a biology teacher, I struggle to overcome these personal differences, as well as the abstract nature of my discipline, by using hands-on lessons that involve the learner in the active DOING of science. By having living things in the classroom, we can create a context not only for learning science but for acquiring proficiency in the language, as well.

My Project

I once had an undergraduate biology professor tell my class that "insects rule the world, we're just living in it." My goal is to help young people get past the "eww" factor to appreciate insects for their incredible diversity of forms, lifestyles and adaptations to their environments. As a classroom teaching tool, they are enormously helpful. As living things, they exemplify the abstract concepts the course seeks to communicate. They are also unfamiliar enough that they can be used to teach basic skills (observing, describing, comparing classifying) and versatile enough to yield advanced projects on sociobiology, DNA science and molecular biology. Our goal in obtaining a varied set of invertebrates is to cultivate an inexpensive, compact, sustainable community of organisms in the classroom. Kids will select from among them to create living micro-habitats from which they can develop science skills, culminating in a research project involving their model organism.

Your support can make cutting edge science accessible to a disadvantaged population of students struggling to learn new content, a new language and a new way of life in the United States.

Please help make positive, empowering science learning possible!
