This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work as a first grade CTT (Collaborative Team Teaching) teacher in Bushwick, Brooklyn. My 20 students are a mix of Special Ed and General Ed students. Most of my students are of Latino descent and are English Language Learners.
My children do not have it easy. Many of their parents do not speak English, they come from foster homes, and some do not even know when or where their next meal is coming from. All of these things just add to the stress of school and daily learning activities. It is a wonder to me that they come to school every single day, willing to learn.
My team teacher and I wanted to begin daily yoga practice with our children. Yoga helps children with and without disabilities understand how to breathe, focus, and feel at peace with themselves and others around them; not to mention it helps stimulate cognitive and motor abilities.
With daily yoga practice, my team teacher and I believe that our children will be able to better focus on their schoolwork and will be able to solve differences between their peers without getting angry.
I was wondering if you could donate some yoga mats so that we could begin performing this art with our students.
I believe that by learning the art of yoga using these mats, my students will learn to focus and solve problems on their own. Yoga will also help them excel in all school subjects. I believe in my children and hope that you do too. This is why I am asking you to help us by giving us some greatly needed tools.
Thank You.
