This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

District 75 serves the highest needs special needs students and, oftentimes, these students also fall into the highest needs economically disadvantaged category. Over 90% of my students fall into this category. We are a 12-month program, where students attend year-round to receive services.

My students are part of the largest school district in the country -- the NYC DOE -- and they fall into the highest needs category.

For years, I have poured my own money into my classroom, but it is not enough! I have reached out to local community members and collected used and refurbished computers, but they do not meet the requirements to run modern software.

I teach grades K-8 and a total of nine classes, a daily lunch club, and a weekly positive behavior intervention club as a reward for students. All students would have access to these resources! That is why today, I am reaching out for global support to help our highest-needs students get an equal chance to succeed! We truly need your assistance to level the playing field. Many students come from homes that do not have Internet access or technology, further increasing the achievement gap.

My Project

Students have been learning remotely since mid-March 2020 due to the pandemic. In September 2020, we began a blended model in NYC public schools with a mix of in-person and remote learning. Last Thursday, 11/19/20 all NYC Public Schools went fully remote again and realistically this is how it will be for the foreseeable future. There is a huge focus on the negative academic effects of students learning remotely and being separated from in-person classes.

There is an equally devastating concern about students not being able to interact with their teachers and peers to build the social-emotional skills necessary to thrive during this tender age.

For this reason, I came up with the idea of partnering with Microsoft and Minecraft for Education to create a server that will act as a digital playground for students to play, interact, create, explore, and collaborate while they are remote. I have been hosting a server using my home computer and have successfully tested the model with students and staff. Now, I would like to get a dedicated computer capable of hosting a server where students broken up by grade-level and age-appropriate groups are able to play together and interact.

The only factor limiting creating a server, is a powerful computer. With your help, we can provide a safe environment for our students to play at home! The computer will remain in the school building where it will stay connected. The city provided iPads with cellular data for students without internet. Microsoft has partnered with us giving access to Minecraft for Education. By creating this server, students will be able to grow their social-emotional skills and play in a safe space even while separated from each other at home. Thank you so much for your continued generous support! It means the world to us!
