Mrs. Jenkins from Chicago IL is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a classroom rug, bean bag chairs, and an accessible book center to encourage independent reading.

Imagine the feeling of curling up in your favorite reading chair to lose yourself in a book. My classroom lacks an inviting space for children to read comfortably. The tile floor is an unappealing place to sit and read and adult size chairs are often too large for my first graders.
As a reading interventionist, I work with struggling readers in 1st, 2nd,and 3rd grade.
They attend a public school on the south side of Chicago, in a low income area. Many of my students come from backgrounds that do not encourage reading for enjoyment. My students come to school each day eager to learn and are excited at any opportunity to explore the classroom library. Unfortunately, many of my students do not have the opportunity to engage in reading outside of the classroom due to a lack of reading materials at home. I hope to encourage my students to become lifelong learners and readers. Creating an inviting, accessible classroom library will allow my students to see reading as an activity they can engage in at home.
Our classroom needs a comfortable place for students to become engaged in reading. A rug will allow them to be off of the tile floor and beanbag chairs will provide them with a comfortable place to sit and read. My classroom has a large amount of books at a variety of reading levels. However, these books are tucked away in bins and students are not able to browse and find books they are interested in. A bookshelf at the students' eye level will allow them to self-select and enjoy a variety of literature.
Your donation will encourage my students to become lifelong readers by providing them with a space to read independently.
It is incredibly important for children to develop a love of literature at a young age and it is my hope that they will come to see reading as a lifelong interest.
