Children overwhelmed with stressful lives need a special place where they can find comfort. Helping children develop strong emotional skills early in life makes a difference in their long-term health. My students need a space in our classroom that helps them better respond to stressful situations.
My school is located in West Harlem.
Many of my students must endure the stress of homelessness, poverty, divorce, and neighborhood violence. Despite the challenging circumstances many of my students live in, they are bright, enthusiastic, kind, and inquisitive children. These are children with limitless potential!
My Project
The tented bookshelves, bean bag chair, carpet, and social-emotional books will create a cozy corner in my room for children experiencing emotional crisis. When a child is too sad, angry, or scared to think, they can seek refuge in this area. Children in emotional crisis like an enclosed, private space to escape to that is full of comforting objects like pillows and books.
Children cannot learn when they are in emotional crisis.
This project supports children's emotional needs by providing them with strategies to effectively be both aware of and regulate their emotions.
