My Project

This year is our first year offering AP English Language and Composition at our uniquely diverse school here in San Francisco. When we saw a need for more nonfiction choice reading books, we asked students what to add to the classroom library; this project is based on some of their requests

Giving students access to nonfiction choice reading is a powerful way to support their literacy, their understanding of themselves as readers, and their understanding of the world.

These quality nonfiction titles will also help students build critical thinking and rhetorical analysis skills that support them not only in succeeding on the AP test but also in navigating and improving the world beyond the classroom.

These titles are high-interest and diversify our library. Furthermore, by having multiple copies of each of these choice reading options, we open up the possibility for students to engage in buddy reads. When students read the same text as a partner, it opens up opportunities for them to support one another in unpacking the text and challenge one anothers' thinking about the topics they learn about. This makes this project have an exponentially powerful impact on critical thinking.
