This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One of my favorite quotes reads, "Teachers who love teaching, teach children to love learning". In my case I am trying to find ways to transfer my love of reading and literacy to my students.

My student population consists on of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Specific Learning Disabilities and Intellectual Disabilities.

In reading my students are performing 2 or more grade levels behind. Working with this population can be difficult, but it is super rewarding within this environment, I teach the most interesting, group of 2nd graders ever! Our school is a Title I, nearly 100% free and reduced price lunch, with a mostly inner-city student population. My school is a student-centered environment filled with "Game-Changing" Teachers"! This is my third year but on day one I knew this school was home. As a team, we are continuously brainstorming ways to evolve as educators...and we are also advocates for family involvement in the learning process!

My Project

Hearing a book on cd helps students see how the words can come to life and put the student right into the book. It helps students to focus on the sounds of words read and provides a model of fluent reading. Because it would be impossible for me to read (and reread) every book that interests each child, a listening center creates an opportunity to pick a book that most interests them to listen to. It is my experience that most non-readers love to be read to, but love the independence of choosing a book just for them! A listening library would allow them that freedom, while giving them another example of exemplar fluency and expression. We also do not have a working radio and station table for our listening center. With the your help, we will be provided with a radio, a connector for multiple students to listen, as well as a listening center shelf to serve as a hub for all our book and audio products.

Reading to children is not only one of the best activities to stimulate language and cognitive skills; it also builds motivation, curiosity, and memory.

Among other things, reading aloud builds word-sound awareness in children, which is a critical skill for reading success. I would love to build a listening library in my classroom that will allow students all the opportunities and enrichment that reading provides!
