This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Anahi, Kennedy and Mia are excited to put together this project to get books for our school's book club. We have finally gotten a core group of students who are interested in reading and come to monthly book club meetings.
Students and I brainstormed ways that we could continue to get new, engaging titles for them to read for book club.
Students came up with a list of titles they think would be interesting to a broad audience of students, not just current members of the club.
Students are learning to be life-long learners both by investigating how to persuade someone to fund their project, and also by spending their free time reading instead of engaging in a more passive activity, like watching TV. Students are learning the power of asking for what they want and need. They are also learning to set goals for themselves.
In Their Own Words
We are trying to raise the funds to get books we want to read in book club. We think that getting this set of books will help students continue to be interested in joining the club.
We will spread the word to our friends about how great the books we read in book club are and will influence our friends to come and take part in the club. Also, we will continue to bring in new ideas of books we should read and activities we should participate in as a part of book club.
This project is important because many people our age think that reading is completely not interesting. By our having an opportunity to have ownership over what we are reading as a club, it shows other students that our voice matters. It also makes new students more likely to join us at our meetings.
