Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are hardworking K-3rd graders who are enrolled in general education classes but also receive special education services for a portion of each day. They have education goals targeting reading and mathematics.
My school serves a diverse community in South Sacramento where students benefit from free breakfast and lunch.
Many students come from families that are learning English and face challenges to support learning in the home. Despite obstacles, my students arrive at school ready and eager to learn.
My Project
My students are working hard to become better readers. In class they are learning foundational reading skills and reading comprehension. They are already motivated learners and a comfortable Library Reading Area will not only reinforce their love of books but also encourage them to continue reading for enjoyment.
My students love stories and are eager to be able to read and share with each other and with their families.
A Library Reading Area will benefit my classroom by allowing students to enjoy stories in a more relaxed setting. They can choose a book, choose a soft spot to sit (or a bean bag!), and enjoy a good story, or maybe an informational book about sharks. In class, my students work at tables to learn reading skills like phonics and fluency. A Library Reading Area will be a reward for their hard work; they can enjoy a good book in a relaxed setting. My hope is that the students will learn to read for enjoyment and continue reading at home and into the future.
I have already purchased many picture books, story books, chapter books, informational books, and subscriptions to Ranger Rick and Ranger Rick Jr. My goal is to have a comfortable area for my students to enjoy their literary selections. I am requesting a soft Plum Rectangular Carpet - 6' x 9' to define the area. For seating I included 1 Calming Colors® Little Beanbag Seat - Sky Blue and 1 Calming Colors® Little Beanbag Seat - Sage Green for independent readers to enjoy. Additionally, I added 4 Flex-Space Wobble Cushions (2 orange, 1 green, 1 blue) for the younger children to use while enjoying a read
